Peter J. Brown, Partner at Liebert Cassidy Whitmore's Los Angeles Office and Chair of the firm's Wage and Hour Practice Group was named one of California's Top 75 Labor & Employment Lawyers for 2012 in the annual list published by the Daily Journal.
Peter serves as the Chief Negotiator of approximately 15 Southern California jurisdictions, where he has recently negotiated dozens of collective bargaining agreements between public sector employers and labor unions. He also is the author of California Public Employee Relations' Pocket Guide to the Family and Medical Care Leave Acts.
The Daily Journal specifically cited Peter's work as lead counsel for the Chino Valley Fire District and Chief Negotiator for the City of Santa Ana. As lead counsel for the Chino Valley Fire District, Peter argued that a retiree was not entitled to his job back. The San Bernardino Superior Court disagreed and ordered that he be given the first available Fire Captain position. Peter brought a writ to the California Court of Appeal and the Court of Appeal reversed the Superior Court, issuing the writ and agreeing with Peter's argument.
As Chief Negotiator for the City of Santa Ana, Peter was tasked with helping the City who was faced with a $30 million budget deficit. Peter was successful in negotiating savings with the Police Association in excess of $10 million and negotiating with the Fire Association, whose services were contracted to the Orange County Fire Authority, by reaching an agreement which also saved in excess of $10 million per year.
Peter has also distinguished himself as a sought-after speaker, author and trainer on topics that impact our firm's clients. He speaks at numerous conferences throughout the state of California and nationally on public sector labor and employment law topics.
Peter is a graduate of Hofstra University School of Law and is currently a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Along with this honorable mention, Peter has also been named to the list of 2012 Southern California Super Lawyers® and received the 2012 National Public Employer Labor Relations Association (NPELRA)'s Presidents Award for his valuable service and dedication to public sector clients through his representation of public agencies in all areas of labor and employment law.
