Attorney General Investigation Of Some Officer-Involved Shootings

SIGNED INTO LAW—AB 1506 (McCarty)  Authorizes State Attorney General to investigate officer-involved shootings of unarmed civilians; requires AG to prepare an investigation report and post on the internet; and requires AG to prosecute criminal actions as warranted against peace officers.

Effective January 1, 2021, this law adds new Government Code section 12525.3.  This law authorizes the State Attorney General to investigate incidents of officer-involved shootings of unarmed civilians as defined.  The Attorney General must prepare a written investigation report with recommendations for modifications to policies, and post the report on the internet (with redactions as required by law).  If criminal charges are warranted, the Attorney General must initiate and prosecute criminal charges against the officer.
