SB 1063 – Suicide Hotline Number on Pupil Identification Cards

CATEGORY: Private Education Matters
CLIENT TYPE: Private Education
DATE: Oct 25, 2024

Existing law requires a public or private school that serves pupils in any of grades 7 to 12 and issues pupil identification cards to print the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, among other phone numbers, on the identification cards.

Senate Bill 1063 (SB 1063), effective July 1, 2025, instead requires the schools subject to this requirement to print the phone number for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline on the identification cards.

The bill requires schools subject to this requirement that, as of July 1, 2025, have a supply of unissued identification cards that are noncompliant with this requirement to issue the noncompliant identification cards until that supply is depleted.

(SB 1063 repeals and replaces section 215.5 of the Education Code.)
