Professional Standards in Public Safety: Conducting Fair and Legally Compliant Administrative Investigations Seminar

Strengthening internal affairs and professional standards operations through practical training. The seminar is designed for conducting, supervising, and resolving administrative investigations across public agencies.

This POST-approved course provides a complete guide to conducting a fair and thorough public safety investigation that will create a defensible disciplinary action in the event of sustained findings.  You will gain an understanding of the impact that good decision-making and strategy have on the agency’s success in defending investigations and winning appeals.

This 2-day internal affairs seminar will encompass legal aspects of a properly conducted public safety investigation, including topics such as:

  • Overview of the Public Safety Officers Procedural Bill of Rights Act (POBR) and the Firefighters Procedural Bill of Rights Act (FBOR), and the consequences of violations for your agency.
  • Best practices for the initiation and organization of a public safety investigation.
  • Methods for obtaining documents and other evidence.
  • Interview techniques, transcript recommendations, and pitfalls to avoid.
  • Common mistakes during investigations and strategies for resolution.
  • Current and emerging legal trends in public safety allegations and discipline.


Who Should Attend?

Personnel assigned to a police department’s professional standards unit, most notably investigators, and the supervisors, managers, risk management, fire department personnel, and human resources professionals that manage or oversee public safety personnel investigations.

Dates:

This is a two-day internal affairs in-person seminar. You must attend both days in order to receive credit.

Tuesday, June 16, 2026, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; AND

Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Credit:

POST: This course is post-approved for 12 hours of POST credit. In order to receive credit, you must sign in with your name and POST ID on both days of the workshop.

MCLE: Liebert Cassidy Whitmore is an approved MCLE provider. Participating attorneys are eligible for 12 hours of MCLE. Forms and instructions will be provided along with the presentation materials.

HRCI Credit: Credit Hours Awarded: 12.00

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations received 5 business days before the seminar are eligible for a full refund, minus a nonrefundable $40 administrative fee. Cancellations received fewer than 5 business days before the seminar are not eligible for a refund.  No-shows will not be refunded.
