Thanks to our extensive expertise in wage and hour laws, our attorneys are able to recognize nuanced risks and provide practical and innovative solutions to help nonprofits with all of their wage and hour needs. Our counsel includes guidance on meal and rest break compliance, overtime rate calculations, proper classification of employees for exemption purposes, compliance with the ABC Test and independent contractor determinations, and management of vacation and paid time off policies.

We also advise nonprofits on the tax implications of compensation practices for both employers and employees, including payroll tax withholding obligations, reporting requirements, and the treatment of stipends, bonuses, and other forms of compensation. When payroll or classification errors occur, we assist organizations in assessing potential liability and implementing corrective measures designed to minimize penalties and mitigate exposure under wage and tax laws.

In addition, we routinely defend nonprofit clients against wage claims in court and before the California Department of Labor Standards Enforcement (Labor Commissioner) and the U.S. Department of Labor, and we provide strategic guidance in responding to agency audits, investigations, and related enforcement actions.

Our firm regularly presents training programs on compliance with wage and hour laws and has continuously done so since 1980. We provide specialized and customized trainings for clients on nuanced wage and hour issues. We also regularly provide wage and hour presentations at conferences, including:

  • National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS)
  • National Business Officers Association (NBOA)
  • California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS)
  • California Independent School Business Officers (Cal-ISBOA)

We have also developed an FLSA audit workshop for our consortium clients, whose membership includes more than one hundred private schools throughout California.

To find presentations on these topics, please see our Training Calendar and our library of Webinars on Demand.
