Beginning July 1, 2026, SB 848 will impose several new compliance obligations on California private schools.
With the school year winding down and July 1 quickly approaching, schools should be prepared to implement the following items during the summer break:
- Professional Boundaries Policy: Effective July 1, 2026, schools must adopt a written policy applicable to employees, volunteers, and contractors addressing appropriate conduct in adult-student, student-student, and adult-adult interactions, including electronic communications. There are specific requirements for this policy and LCW can help schools evaluate whether their current boundaries policy aligns with the statutory requirements.
- Facilities and Supervision Plan: By July 1, 2026, schools must adopt a written facilities and supervision plan designed to promote visibility, ensure adequate supervision, and reduce the risk of unsupervised contact between students and adults.
- Mandated Reporter Training: The mandated reporter training portion of SB 848 goes into effect on July 1, 2026. Under this provision, employees, certain volunteers, board members, and covered contractors must complete training within six weeks of beginning service, within six weeks of the start of the school year, and annually thereafter. The training must be done by using state-provided or equivalent insurer-approved training and schools must report completion to the California Department of Education.
