Police Officer v. County (2025) – Successfully prosecuted the dismissal of a peace officer for allegations of serious misconduct.  The officer was alleged to have engaged in misconduct during a routine stop of a citizen whom the officer was previously acquainted with.

Police Officer v. County (2022) – Successfully prosecuted the dismissal of a peace officer for intentional dishonesty. A veteran of the department, the Officer failed to ensure a response to a resident’s calls and subsequently lied about it in the watch report.

Battalion Chief v. City (2025):  A battalion chief (BC) alleged he was denied promotion based on his race in violation of FEHA.  He also alleged that the city retaliated against him for his internal complaints, participation in investigations, or opposition to perceived misconduct by denying him a promotion and subjecting him to adverse employment actions. LCW Partner Jesse Maddox, Partner Nathan Jackson, and Associate Attorneys Charles Hellstrom and Ashley Riser aggressively represented the city during a five-week jury trial. The trial team successfully bifurcated the trial into liability and damages phases; used motions in limine to control the scope of the claims and evidence; was required to address multiple “me too” witnesses; and located key rebuttal evidence in the middle of trial. The jury returned a complete defense verdict for the city.

Police Officer v. City (2023) – Defeated a police officer’s untimely claim for arbitration in both the California Superior Court and in the California Court of Appeal.

Stebbins v. California Public Utilities Commission (2022) – Six week jury trial that resulted in a unanimous defense verdict, upholding CPUC’s decision to terminate its Executive Director for violating the merit principle in California’s constitution. The jury found that the CPUC had no retaliatory motive against the Plaintiff. This case was selected as one of California’s “Top Verdicts” of 2022 by the Daily Journal.

Stebbins v. California Public Utilities Commission (2024) – Convinced California Court of Appeal to uphold a unanimous defense verdict.  The Court of Appeal found that the former executive failed to show any reversible error in jury instructions.

Former Fire Chief v. Fire Protection District (2023) – Defeated a former fire chief’s retaliation claim in the California Court of Appeal on the grounds that the former chief failed to comply with the Governmental Claims Act (GCA) and could not prove that his attorney’s demand letter substantially complied with the GCA.
