2023 Peace Officer Employment Legislative Update: The New Landscape

CATEGORY: Seminars
DATE: September 06 2023, 8:30 am

Recent years have brought seismic changes to the law enforcement profession in California.  Multiple Legislative actions have significantly altered the law governing peace officer employment, and agencies and officers will have to adjust accordingly.  Experienced public safety attorney Paul Knothe will lead a thoughtful discussion of the new laws, focusing on the practical steps that agencies can take to avoid fault lines in peace officer employment, from hiring to termination.

With an array of new employment-related public safety legislation going into effect in recent years the California legislature has re-confirmed its commitment to press forward with significant police reform measures.  Many new laws that went into effect in the last few years – which cover everything from citizenship requirements to hate group membership – will require significant changes in how California law enforcement agencies operate, especially in the employment context.  This presentation provides a thorough overview of these new rules and regulations and provides practical suggestions for compliance.

Knothe will walk the audience through complex scenarios that can arise under these new laws and explore the practical effects they will have on the decisions law enforcement leaders have to make.
