California Legal Symposium

CATEGORY: Webinars on Demand

Recordings for the California Legal Symposium 2023 are available now through January 10, 2024 for those who were unable to attend on November 9.

Cal-ISBOA has once again partnered with Liebert Cassidy Whitmore (LCW) to bring you a virtual California Legal Symposium. The Symposium features top brass from LCW who will provide a deep dive into current legal issues facing independent schools, with an emphasis on operating in California’s legal and regulatory environment. This is a must-attend event for anyone who has to make important decisions for their school. Program details are listed below.

Opening Remarks

Hot Topics in Wage & Hour Law
Brian Walter, Partner and Julie L. Strom, Senior Counsel
Complex wage and hour issues can arise in every area of school operations, from how to pay employees who take on extra duties,  how to compensate and track time for walk-on coaches, whether to classify workers as contractors or employees, or when someone can be paid with a stipend. New laws regarding pay transparency and evolving issues such as reimbursement for cell and computer equipment use make this topic one that business officers need to stay up to date on to ensure they do not face expensive wage and hour claims. This session will help schools navigate these tricky issues and understand the practical applications of these varied wage and hour laws.

Navigating Leave Issues
Grace Chan, Partner and Stacy Velloff, Senior Counsel
This session will discuss common leave scenarios among school employees, including federal and state medical leaves (FMLA and CFRA), leaves related to pregnancy and sick leave issues.  Using interactive case studies, we will discuss common landmines when navigating employee leaves of absence, such as eligibility issues and the intersection of leave rights, as well as recent legislative changes that impact the administration of leaves.

Write it Right: Best Practices for Effectively Documenting Employee Performance
Elizabeth Arce, Partner and Monica Espejo, Associate
Documentation is critical in almost every aspect of managing your employees.  But don’t just document to document!  Poor documentation is often worse than no documentation at all.  This webinar is designed to provide tips and practical guidance on the techniques, skills, and tools necessary to prepare effective workplace documentation that creates transparent expectations, keeps track of progress, identifies areas of risk, and supports personnel decisions.

Legal Update/Emerging Legal Issues
Michael Blacher, Partner and Brett Overby, Associate
Keeping up with changes to the law and evolving best practices can be challenging!  This interactive workshop is designed to inform independent school business officers of current and emerging legal issues by exploring relevant cases, statutes, and other developments from California and around the country.  Business officers will leave this workshop with insights that will help them manage developing trends and evaluate risk.

Closing Remarks

Each of the sessions will be eligible for SHRM and HRCI continuing education credit.

Recording links will be sent via email within one business day of receiving payment.
